Belief vs. Science? Or Knowing? Is there a difference?

What do you believe in?
Now that is a loaded question! There is a certain implication of trusting in something or someone when you say "belief": hope, have faith, trust; all of these rely on the unknown turning out the way you want it.
Of course, the anti-believer would be pessimistic, "prove it" - a "when I see it, I'll believe it" attitude - which often correlates with "I believe in science", a little play on words since science is supposed to be based on just observable, proven facts - Supposed?
Yes, more on that in a moment -

Knowing?
What is the difference between knowing and having a belief? When you believe in something there is a subtle current of hoping or wishing to it that allows for doubt. When you know something to be true, there is a confidence that surpasses the level of doubt.

Deepak Chopra once stated "We don't say "I believe in electricity", You know that electricity exists even if you cannot see it."

The same can be said about air, or physics components like sub-atomic particles. This is the same with spirituality, you develop a knowing about it - certain spiritual concepts resonate with you rather than you just hoping that it is true or believing.

So, back to the science connection - Concepts that were once thought of as beliefs and ideas are now being proven as fact by scientists!
For example - several studies have been done on the intention of the scientists and their experiments. They found that the scientists can influence the findings based on what they intended to happen (and possibly, their beliefs). This is one reason why there are so many conflicting study results.

So the more optimistic - "I believe it therefore I can see it" really can be a scientific process.

Taking that into consideration, there are quite a few concepts that you may or may not know of that have been studied and considered proven by certain scientists (remember, intention applies here as well):

Collective Conscious/Mind - You can see similar behavior suddenly appear in humans on different continents at the same time (even before the internet or other communication). Are you tapping into a pool of thought and knowledge that is available to all of us at once? - an often quoted study called "the Hundredth monkey" proved that one monkey (who was not using the internet) discovered a new tool to use, and once the hundredth monkey in the same area learned this tool, mysteriously, monkeys thousands of miles away were suddenly using the same new tool the same way. This is a paraphrased summary, of course, but you get the idea. . .
Or
Healing energy - studies on what is called "healing hands" or "laying of hands" (this is where a person concentrates with the intention of sending healing energy through their hands to the subject) have shown that there is a direct physical effect to the subject, whether it is a bacteria dish or a human being. Reiki healers have been known for this for thousands of years - nurses are now getting certified in this process to assist their patients.
Or
Mind/Body connection - the affect of placebos are well documented and used in mainstream medicine. This is an example of the mind creating a physical response in the body. You also know that mental diseases such as stress, anxiety, depression, can create physical pain and disease in the body. This concept was once considered nonsense and unproven and now its gone too far the other way "its all in your head"! Once the mind creates a physical response, you need to treat both the cause (mind) and the effect (physical).

There are other spiritual concepts that are considered "known" even though it is too difficult to "prove" them with the tools that are available at this time or are just being proven in this era:

public domain blue heaven Timelessness - Dr. Einstein brought this theory to the common man during his tenure as one of our most brilliant scientists and it is widely accepted and used as a basis for discovering other theories in physics.
Or
Thoughts Cause Physical Reaction (on the heels of the mind/body connection) - It is now proven that your thoughts can create physical structure and changes. Thinking new thoughts and learning new skills both actually restructure the brain by creating new neurons in the brain. You also send energy (electric pulses) through your thoughts to interact with others. . . and now with computers and other instruments - quadriplegics can manipulate computers and other objects with their thoughts. So, what else can your thoughts do? (energy/intention and thoughts)

So what about some of the other concepts out there? Particularly the ones that may affect your spirituality system?

Reincarnation - there are many cases of children recognizing people and places in detail where they have never been before, and speaking other languages without any exposure to them. . . this could be explained as having lived there in a previous life and remembering that life.
Or
Other Planes and levels of beings - people throughout the world claim to have experienced different worlds or planes, angels, guides, and/or claim to be from these places and the stories are all very similar.
Or
Soul Agreements - a popular theory that explains why you are here and experiencing this life. You chose what you wanted to experience and learn in this lifetime and created agreements with others to help you have these lessons and you help others in their lessons. All to experience every aspect of life (tragic to joyous) for learning and becoming closer to the "Divine" "Oneness" or "God".

Does all this sound far-fetched to you? Remember, only a few hundred years ago you would have been thought a heretic and crazy if you believed the earth rotated around the sun.
Does one or more resonate with something inside you? This is an area you may want to explore further - see if it fits as a piece of your spiritual belief system.

If your interest is sparked by one or more of the topics, look into them further. If not, continue with your own process to develop your spiritual belief (knowing) system in other ways - discussion, reading, meditating, exploring, etc.

What is important is that you develop a "knowing" that can sustain you through the challenges and opportunities you experience - that guides your intention, choices and actions for your highest good. Believing or Knowing, both create the process for a strong foundation to build on and live on.
