Your Tools to Finding Purpose in Life - You are Not Without a Purpose!
Finding purpose in life - one of the more compelling journeys you can sign up for! When you decide to take this journey, you are opening yourself up to having more love, fulfillment and and abundance in your life! Why? Realizing who you are and why you are here (i.e. purpose)IS a large part of being "here", one of THE quests, if you will.
Big Picture: If You are Here . . . You Have a Purpose = Being Here! Or, another way of saying that - by virtue of being here, you are supposed to be here! You can learn more with the
Spirituality
articles.
How can you be in "Purpose"? Here is the connection:
Meditate
to open to your
Intuition
; follow the flow of where you are being led and what you "sense" is "right" (even if it is challenging, right does not equal easy). This is your SELF moving forward with finding purpose in life. When you are attaining purpose of life, you are able to receive and give joy and are energized with what you are doing in your life.
NOT just Big Dreams! Some of the happiest lives are based on little, day to day, even conventional, activities. They bring pleasure and allow for a balance of "doing" for mind, body, heart and soul. Finding purpose in life fuels the "WHY?" behind creating habits (exercise, eating well, playing, cleaning, etc.) so they do not become "SHOULDS"! They now support your purpose and therefore your desire to do them.
Beware of the SHOULDS! This is worth repeating! In finding your life purpose, if you write down statements that come from the should, oughta, need to, category = WRONG! Do not judge yourself! If your purpose involves playing with puppies - so be it! Shoulds are outside influences of authority, culture, and gets you off your path. You have learned to appropriate judgments as your own from others (who are usually negative, bitter, caught in fear or not following his/her own purpose path. You will do more work with this concept later in
values clarification.
"Too often we follow a path that is not really our own, one that others have set for us. We forget, that whichever way we go, the price is the same: in both cases we will pass through both difficult and happy moments. But when we are living our dream, the difficulties we encounter make sense." (Paulo Coelho)
More Benefits of Purpose: - Live Longer (and not just exist!) - studies show that those who retire from a job will often die with in the next few years because they do not have a "purpose" anymore.
- Vitality - be, act, feel, and look younger! Striving to be in purpose keeps the mind, heart, body and soul energized.
- Why am I here? - finding purpose in life gives you a sense of knowing yourself and a better understanding of how this life works - you are not without a purpose for being.

In the introductory article,
Finding your life purpose, the foundation for finding purpose in life
devaliving-training provided the first steps to finding purpose in life. These next practices are built upon the information you have acquired so far. Again, this entails self examination, so please take your time and put some thought into each category before moving to the final practice.
PRACTICE 1: Areas of your life This time you are going to be looking at areas of your life for clues to add to your list, starting with past experiences:
- Starting with childhood and going all the way up until now, which experiences, events, happenings, times, people, locations, stand out to you? Write down a brief summary of each, focusing on the following:
- What did you like? What did you not like? What was the environment? Who were you with? How were you feeling? Why does this stand out for you?
- Your accomplishments: What were they? What talents/skills/qualities did you use? Why did you do them? How did you feel? What courses in school were easy for you? Hard? Which did you like and why? What clubs, organizations, topics were you interested in? Why? What do you still like to do or still interested in?
- Work/Career: How do you contribute to the company, employees? What is the value of what you do? What do you like about your job - location, people, environment, the work, the purpose of the work? How much time and energy does it take? What else do you like - tools used, receiving and giving information, prestige, projects, teams? Why? What is your ideal job? What would you need to do to get it?
Are you starting to see the commonalities here? How about what you do and what you really like to do? What are the pieces of each situation that you are drawn to? PRACTICE 2: Possibilities Now, for a little story telling, past and future! Reminder - take your time with these, relax and try not to censor yourself.
- When was the last time you felt really satisfied? Describe what was the situation, and what was happening.
- What are you like at your best? At your worst? When does this happen?
- What are you doing when you completely lose track of time? What puts you in a state of flow or intense, pleasurable concentration?
- What would be your perfect day - tell about the people, place, doings, beings, etc.
- If you could have "it" all - what would that be? Sky's the limit, no censoring or self judging!
- You may only have 5 years to live - what would you like to accomplish by then? Have by then? Be by then?
Again, what is the trend here, if any? At this point, you should have a pretty good picture of your talents, skills, passions, hopes and dreams. What makes you happy and fulfilled is the biggest clue to finding purpose in life. PRACTICE 3: Writing your Purpose Statement! Okay, now don't get nervous or fall into doubt - this takes awhile to put together and once you do, you can always change it! WHAT?? Thats right, your purpose may shift as your life changes! You will accomplish certain goals and then you may decide you are drawn to a completely different way of being. That is one reason why you write your statement based on being and doing rather than goals and destinations. So take small, uninterrupted periods of time and jot some notes down for each of the following: NOTE: Meditating before each session will assist your consciousness to tap into the subconscious input from your higher self!
- What do you see as your life's true purpose?
- How would you have to think, speak, act, be in order to bring that purpose into being?
- What activities would you be involved in?
- On a day to day basis, how would you live if you followed your life's purpose completely?
- What habits would you have to create and what would you need to delete in order to live your purpose?
For your first draft - just write! You should have the elements that get you excited and energized. Focus on your highest passion numbers, this is what fulfills you and gives you a sense of purpose. (Proficiency can be acquired). In your second draft - Start bringing in the focus so that your statement is only one to two sentences long that are easily memorized. This will be your touchstone for making your life decisions!
Before you start your final draft - here are some examples of purpose statements:
- My purpose is to write stories for children that touch their hearts and help them believe anything is possible in this world.
- My purpose is to inspire people to free their creative spirit and find joy, while I also live in my creative power.
- My purpose is to make people laugh, so that the challenges of life don't seem as difficult.
- I am here to grow beautiful gardens that provide sustenance and beauty so that others may behold nature's brilliance and power.
- My purpose is to guide and nurture others, in particular those who are suffering from traumas.
- I am here to discover the mysteries of our world and give hope to those who are waiting for cures and treatment.
Sometimes using metaphors can assist you in capturing the right sentiment and vitality:- I am the (BLANK) that (BLANK)
- I am the search light that shows people their path.
- I am the anchor that keeps others from floating adrift.
- I am the brilliant sunlight shining through to reveal the truth.
Get the idea? You can write about the actual skill/talent or be more general and write the meaning of the skill. How does one person doing one particular thing affect the whole world? Everyone does - you just need to express it for yourself! Continue to play with this statement until it brings a sense of excitement and fulfillment to you when you say it aloud. This is your motivator, your encourager, your higher self communicating to you how important your place is in this world.
You can now use this information to create your goals, your mission statement (an even bigger picture) and your Plan for abundance, fulfillment, love and joy! You are not without a purpose -
Your next step is to clarify and deepen your understanding of your value system -
