Transcendental Meditation - Can You Benefit from TM?
The Beatles brought worldwide attention to Transcendental Meditation, or TM, when they visited the Maharishi in the early 70's. This is a brand, if you will, created by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to bring simple meditation to the masses.
This, for many people, was their first exposure to meditation, with thousands lining up to learn how to meditate in the USA. There are many opinions of this particular practice and its organization.
Some continue to practice TM decades after their initiation; and there is a continuing interest among those just discovering TM. Others that prefer a deeper level of meditation call TM the "fast food" of meditation. Of course, as with any spiritual organization, there are a few claims of the organization being a cult.
The benefits of practicing TM, like many other types of simple meditation, include stress management and calmness. The practice itself consists of sitting in meditation for twenty minutes twice a day. You use a
mantra
to assist in focusing and emptying the mind. This is also a tool for centering and quiets the mind chatter. To learn how to do TM, you connect through the TM organization's certified teachers. You will receive your own private mantra as a symbol of your initiation. For the latest information, continue your research on the Web.
