Values Clarification - Align with Your Purpose for Your Success and Fulfillment!
Values guide your life! Values clarification can tell you whether you are aware of them, acting on them, or ignoring them. This determines how your life is going.
Values are who YOU are! - Not who you would like to be or who you think you should be! Values clarifcation becomes the compass point to be true to yourself! Values influence your choices in friends, work, activities, what you attach importance to. Others can tell much about your values through your personality traits. (and you, theirs). When actions and values are aligned, life feels content, in harmony with your purpose - you have peace of mind, even in challenging times.
Not in alignment? It is the cause of conflict if your behavior does not match your values. You feel discomfort, uneasiness, anxiety or a sense of "something" is not right. For example: You value family and constantly work late, you value integrity and are urged to cheat someone, you value financial security and you get in debt (maybe a higher value of gratification is working here?).

Honor your values and life is fulfilling!
Values clarification is a great process to deepen your understanding of why you act certain ways and make specific choices. Just as important, is to re-examine or redo the values clarification periodically. While some consider values to be inherent and therefore unchangeable; studies have shown that, similar to your goals and purpose, shifts in life will cause certain values to no longer serve you and yet you are still acting on them. Particularly those you pick up from others (relatives, teachers, friends) in childhood. That is the time of being very impressionable and not necessarily having an understanding of the meaning of the value and its affect on your life. Such as: Value = clean your plate and now you have trouble dieting! Also see the discussion on "shoulds" in
finding your purpose,
and
intention.
If you look at a behavior and ask "why am I doing this?" You may want to investigate the underlying value of it. Question and re-evaluate!
Benefits of Values Clarification: - You can have more fun, know what gives you pleasure!
- Defined values gives direction to your life.
- Values facilitate decision making based on what is important to you.
- Effective time management; spend time on your now known priorities.
- Learn to observe others' values to work more effectively with them. Their values may not coincide with yours, but it is whats important to them and will help you relate to the person.

PRACTICE 1: Advisement- For best results, it is advised to work with a coach or trainer for a more detailed examination to truly get to your existing values. They are often hidden behind the "what you think they should be" mode and are sometimes difficult to define without assistance. Doing this process provided by devaliving-training will get you started and give you an idea of what values you place importance on. Consider this an ongoing process for values clarification of your current values versus others you have appropriated in your life. Keep in mind there are a number of "universal" values (survival - food, shelter, etc.). Try to stay with what is deeply felt for you.
This grid is provided to give you ideas of values and to use as you narrow down your selection - Use a pencil (as you may change your mind several times) and mark off the ones you can eliminate after you complete each of the questions below.

Strive to uncover your top five values to guide your purpose, goals and decisions in life! Use your exercises from the practices of
finding purpose
to assist you with these questions. If you have not completed them, it is highly recommended so you have a clearer understanding of the events and can relate them to these questions.
- Recall the peak moments in your life, both the best and the worst - what were you feeling? What was so important about each of them? Try to match a value to the feeling.
- What must you have in your life (besides basic survival needs)?
- What must you honor or die?
- What do others always say about you? "You always . . ." "You have to . . ." Find a value behind each behavior - e.g. controlling? = Maybe power; need attention?=Maybe recognition; think of others=Maybe leadership, or compassion? Why do you do it?
- Look back at your purpose responses for work - What are the valuable aspects of your job?
- What are you willing to give your life to/for?
- What do you spend most of your time on? If you do not enjoy it, why do you spend that time on it?
- What have you always wanted but never dared to do?
- Think of a few people you look up to; what are the qualities you would like to have and/or admire.
Now, put your clues together and define what each value means to you. Remember, no judgments or shoulds or oughta!! Look at the grid, how are you doing? Feel free to write your own values into the blank spaces. Okay, time to start crossing out the values that are not: Give my life for, highly honor in others, bring extreme pleasure, valuable to me and to others, give my life meaning, bring a sense of fulfillment and purpose, etc. Take your time, do this in several sittings so you can get a fresh perspective.
At this point, you may have your life purpose statement, some ideas of goals and intentions, and your values clarification! Good Job! Have you noticed any changes yet?
